We are working to establish a Natural Burial Sanctuary in BC’s Cariboo Region
For full-body green burials and cremated remains.
Land Conservation with Natural Burial
In a beautiful forested setting, there will be natural burial areas with paths, trails, and benches for meditative walks. Individual gravesites are marked with local stones and GPS. There will be picnic areas, an outdoor labyrinth, and our own design for a "Little Spirits Garden to mark the loss of a pregnancy or infant." The idea of the Little Spirits Garden is thanks to the folks at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria, BC. Our Sanctuary will welcome all beliefs, traditions, and religions and we do not intend to have restrictions or additional costs for those who live outside the Cariboo.
Tumulus * Barrow * Ossuary
A beautiful and protected resting place for cremated ashes
A structure built on the property that will house ashes in urns. Each urn will be contained in a niche within a natural stone and wood structure creating a sacred space for the safekeeping of your loved one's ashes. A place of ceremony and remembrance. Our inspiration for the Ossuary draws heavily on the Stone Barrows that are popping up around the UK. It would be marvelous to be able to raise the funds to hire these folks to come over here and build a Stone Barrow for us. We can dream. We are researching the costs of a build using stone, wood, or cob.
A Gathering Place
For ceremony, celebration and community gatherings
An eco-friendly, sustainable building designed to host memorials, celebrations, and small gatherings with an office, kitchen, and washroom facilities. We envision this building to have small classrooms for workshops and community events ensuring the sanctuary becomes a place where individuals and families are supported through the planning process and the celebration of the lives of their loved ones. Initially, we want to provide a simple cottage style building for family gatherings.
A Green Cemetery area for companion animals
An area of the sanctuary will be set aside for natural burials of companion animals and for the keeping of pets cremated remains. We would like to include pet burials within their human's burial site but this is not currently legal in BC cemeteries. We are working to change that.
Where exactly is the Cariboo?
The Cariboo is a very large region in the Central Interior of British Columbia. The blue marker on this Google map roughly shows the area where we are working to establish our Natural Burial Sanctuary. It's about half way between Vancouver and Prince George.

Nicola Finch shared her passion for Natural Burial and how we’re doing in British Columbia. Hosted in September 2020 by the Death Doula Network BC. "Natural Burial makes sense to me. The earth feeds and nourishes us. In the end, our bodies are what we can give back to feed and nourish the earth. Dying green. It’s kinder to the environment and a gentler process for families and loved ones. It’s so simple, and I believe that there ought to be a natural burial option for every community in BC." Here is the recording of the presentation on Natural Burial in BC.
June 2021. DDNBC and Natural Burial in BC hosted a Panel discussion on Green/Natural Burial. The full recording can be found here.
